There are a few theories regarding how acupuncture works to decrease pain and help with certain medical conditions. The Gate Theory, developed by Dr. Ronald Melzak and Dr. Patrick Wall in 1965, helps to explain how acupuncture works via the nervous system.
This theory explains that when an acupuncture needle is inserted into a certain point in the body, that it stimulates a nerve impulse that travels to the brain. Once the signal enters the brain, it triggers the brain to release our bodies own natural opiodes or pain relieving hormones to stop pain.
Presently there are numerous studies that are being conducted to scientifically prove that acupuncture works. My theory is that each patient that I have treated who feels better after having acupuncture is proof that this medicine works.
